Welcome back, we hope you all had a great summer. This year we welcome 30 new primary 1’s and their families along with some P2’s, P4’s, P5’s and P6’s from the annexe and Ladywell. We have filled all our spaces and unfortunately still have a large waiting list. This means that we are unable to offer emergency days at this time unless there has been a cancellation.
We hope to increase our numbers when we move to the new build however this would be dependent on an inspection from the Care Inspectorate and what space will be made available for Bosca to use in the new building.
Our summer playscheme was lots of fun and we had a packed programme. If your child attended holiday Bosca please pick up an evaluation sheet from the desk, we would love to hear what you and your child thought of it.
Please can you put your child’s name on their clothing including their shoes. The children remove their shoes in the bungalow and we often have a bit of a shoe mix up.
Can we please remind you that the parking restrictions outside the school apply up until 6pm. Please do not risk a fine when collecting your child from Bosca. As the darker nights approach in the past parents cars have been targeted when belongings particularly hand bags are left on display. This has been reported to the police and their advice is to remain vigilant.
Tablets, devices and mobile phones
Before the end of term we asked parents what their views were on the use of tablets, devices and mobile phone use at Bosca. The majority of responses were that they would rather that their children did not play/watch children on devices for the whole time they were at Bosca. They also raised concerns with regards to these high cost items being brought in from home for use at Bosca and the games and apps that had been downloaded onto devices that were then available offline.
As a result of this Bosca will no longer allow the children to use their own tablets and gaming devices and will instead offer the children the opportunity to access ten minutes of gaming in the bungalow. By only using Bosca devices staff and parents can be assured that all games will be suitable for all to play.
Primary 7 children in the past have been encouraged to be Bosca buddies and show that they can be responsible citizens at Bosca. They can gain privileges as a Primary 7 and get their own beanbags and cushions to make their own play space to sit, chat and play. The Primary 7s requested that they get to use their phones to play games at Bosca. It has been agreed with the Primary 7’s that they will get the chance to use their phones for 30 minutes in the Phone Zone with supervision. As this is a “P7 Privilege” if phones are seen to be used out with this time by any of the Primary 7 children the Phone Zone privilege will be removed. We will trial this and review it with the children over the coming months.
Bosca said goodbye to Ashley who has just graduated as a Teacher and Carly who has taken promotion at her other job. Chelsea and Stewart are working towards their SVQ Level 3 in playwork and hope to complete their qualification by the end of the year. Susan is continuing her study and will start her final year of the PDA Childhood Practice Level 9 in September.
Bosca’s management and staff are supported by a parent board. The board are currently struggling to maintain the minimum legal number of board members to run the organisation. Please consider joining the board so that BOSCA can continue in its current “not for profit” status. Usually being a board member requires parents to attend between 4 and 6 short meetings a year.
The Bosca AGM will be held in the Bungalow 18th September 2017 at 7pm please feel free to come along, if you have any questions please speak Beverly. At this meeting parents can join the board and learn a bit more about the workings of Bosca and how you can support your service.
Any arrears and August fees payment should have been made with next months due before the 7th of September. If you have not received your new standing order amount for the new term please ask at the desk. Primary 1 parents will receive paperwork and payment instructions over the coming weeks. If you would like a copy your statement from Aug 16- June 17 please see Beverly.
